Boats lie scattered on the soggy bottom of a bay at low tide, on the Praia dos Cavacos near Olhão. High tides regularly flood the bay and parts of it surroundings on the Ria Formosa, while dead low water can leave a lot of grounds exposed. Birds and fishermen alike profit from the sometimes over two metre difference between ebb and flood. And recreational boaters need to choose their moments wisely with the moon.

Everyday Algarve
The sun sets on the isles of Culatra and Armona, in the far distance, as the moon rises over the Atlantic on a day when the temperatures rose above 20 Celsius as the rain clouds seem to have subsided in the week after a sunny Christmas weekend Captured with iPhone 13 Pro / Wide Camera…
Christmas Day Algarve
A Japanese akita inu is eyeballing a plate of cheese while her owner is contemplating a good glass of single malt to celebrate the Christmas weekend. Boas Festas a tudo!
Everyday Algarve
A former stray dog, now adopted, howls at outside noises from a fenced off front yard on the Praia dos Cavacos near Olhão.
Everyday Algarve
A diesel train traverses from Vila Real de Santo António tot Lagoa, mostly over the Ria Formosa and oftentimes really close to the water, like here in Bias do Sul in Moncarapacho. The railroad is being electrified, a task that is supposed to be completed in 2024.
Everyday Algarve
A hilly front lawn of a recent ruin in Moncarapacho is covered in clover. In fall and winter, this type of weed covers many patches of the typical terra rossa soil in the Algarve. They’re welcome, though: clover helps maintain soil moisture and provides natural food resources for other vegetation. No need to fuel up the weed whacker.
Everyday Algarve
However not as brightly white as the cobblestones in most old town centres, there is no reason to let these dirty terrace stones go completely dark. Powerwashing reveils a substantial difference in before and after!

Everyday Algarve
Colourful baskets for crab fishing are stacked near Praia da Fuseta, opposite to the waterfront village’s boating harbour. In the background, just visible around the edge of the yellow basket, are typical wooden fisherman’s sheds you find on shorelines all over the Algarve.
Everyday Algarve
A pale blue gate in a white wall closes off the garden of a holiday home in Moncarapacho, where bright pink and red coloured flowers might mislead you to think of a different season than late fall. Even with Christmas only a week away, the Algarve always shows some blossom.
